scarce resources (burritos) and unlimited demand (high schoolers)

fight for a burrito

last tuesday the chipotle on colfax opened. on wednesday night I drove by going to tommy’s thai for dinner and what did i see but a mob of people outside the chipotle and the lights on inside showing enormous numbers of folks. they mostly looked young, so i assumed it was a special deal for the kids at east high school.

then today the following post showed up in my rss feeds:

then the mayhem began. A group of “jocks” which is about the only way i can describe them, appeared, and began to force their way to the front of the line. Being #7 in line, and a SENIOR, by the way, i preceded to inform them that we were there FIRST. 20 of us towards the front had been standing there for 20 minutes, peacefully, no pushing, no shoving, no bullshit.

my shouting was wasted. more kids showed up, much pushing and crowding and stomping and whacking-of-your-friend-who-just-got-her-lip-pierced-in-the-face ensued (i’m so sorry, Heather!). oh, and the occasional random person brushing their hand accross your butt. not to mention hair getting pulled, feet getting crushed, and purses shoved in the face.

i think mosh-pits are calmer.

Emily made a sign proclaiming “Crowd Control, Please!” and pressed it up against the glass. to no avail. we ha 5 minutes to go.

yeah. so that’s really sad/bad.

today i went to this chipotle on colfax and i asked the manager about the tuesday event. he said it was pretty crazy but didn’t mention the fighting.

anything for a burrito

on wednesday of this past week i got a t-shirt and on the back of it it said “i’d do anything for a burrito” which is funny and cute but a little inappropriate the day after a shoving match at the stor.

freedback to chipotle

so, here’s my “freedback” to chipotle - if you are going to have these free events, which i think are really fun and a great thing to do, consider hiring some crowd control. while we may do anything for a burrito it’s a bad idea to create a situation that’s likely to erupt in a fight.

opening parties in LA

greg's picture

so, i just got an announcement for a chipotle opening party in LA and it’s a “you buy the burritos, all proceeds benefit a charity” kind of an event. that’s pretty nice for them to do that and also would prevent crazy situations like the one at east high school.

further, i was thinking that all they need to do is open the doors early. if the line never formed, there wouldn’t have been a fight.

apparently the problem

apparently the problem happens at college burrito openings as well what with the honking and the craziness.

I think a “buy one get a coupon for a free burrito” deal or the “all proceeds go to charity” is the best solution. the opening day free burritos thing is just going to go further and further downhill as the restaurants spread to more and more locations.
